Environmental and social responsibility at Kingswood Golf Estate
A holistic approach to integrating world-class facilities with environmental and social responsibility at Kingswood Golf Estate has brought impressive returns that cannot be measured in money, but from which the entire region is profiting.
With the help of the local inhabitants, the natural fynbos and afromontane forest vegetation is being recovered and given a new chance at survival. The river running through the estate is being repopulated with indigenous species on an ongoing basis, which is achieved through training and employment of local people under the supervision of qualified environmentalists.
Kingswood Golf Estate in George has been designed with a vision that reaches beyond profitability. Kingswood's designers and managers are proud to know that the estate and its social and environmental heritage will be part of the region and its continuous wellbeing for a very long time.
Some of Kingswood's Community Upliftment and Environmental Projects:
Bass Relocation Project
The relocation of black bass from a clogged up dam on Kingswood Golf Estate in George to a natural home in Thembalethu, is good news for both the local community and the environment.
This relocation, done in accordance with the Kingswood development program, not only provided the black bass with a new refuge, but also heralded the start of a new era of sustainable income opportunities for the Thembalethu farmers’ association - a black empowerment project representing 29 farmers.
Environmental Day Project
Grade 5 learners from Holy Cross Primary and Thembalethu Primary Schools’ participated in the ecological rehabilitation program. The Kingswood Cares environmental day makes learners aware of the positive impact that the rehabilitation of the golf estate’s Rooi River, its banks, wetlands and forest areas have on restoring the ecosystem.
The hands-on activities include catching organisms in the river, identifying the little animals and releasing them again in dams elsewhere on the estate.
Arbor Day
Indigenous trees were planted by Grade 5 learners of local schools on the 18th hole of the golf course in the Kingswood Golf Estate in George. With typical vision, the team from Kingswood Golf Estate in George understands that the golf estate’s heritage of unsurpassed natural splendour is in the hands of a new generation.
